OpenAI has announced the launch of a $50 million fund dedicated to supporting nonprofits and community organizations. The fund aims to foster partnerships that bring artificial intelligence into key public sectors, including education, healthcare, economic opportunity, and grassroots organizing.
This move follows recommendations from OpenAI’s newly formed nonprofit commission, which was created in April 2025 to guide the company’s philanthropic initiatives. The commission’s first report, based on insights from over 500 nonprofit and community leaders, outlines strategies to ensure that AI development continues to serve the public good.
As part of its broader restructuring, OpenAI is planning to convert its for-profit arm into a public benefit corporation. This shift is intended to align the organization’s capital-raising efforts with its original nonprofit mission: to ensure that artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.
In addition to funding practical AI applications in the nonprofit sector, the initiative will also support community-led research and innovation focused on responsible, equitable AI deployment.
